Ogden's Advanced Manufacturers Face a Workforce Puzzle

Advanced manufacturers around Ogden have invested heavily in automation and precision equipment over the past several years, part of a broader modernization effort aimed at keeping Utah-based manufacturing competitive against lower-cost production regions. But local employers say the bigger constraint on growth isn't equipment — it's finding enough skilled workers to run it.

Technical education programs at local community and technical colleges have expanded manufacturing-focused curricula in response, working directly with area employers to align coursework with the specific skills modern manufacturing floors require, from CNC machining to industrial robotics maintenance.

Closing the Skills Gap

"We can buy the machines. What we can't do is manufacture experienced technicians overnight," said one Ogden-area manufacturing executive. "That has to come from a real pipeline, and building that pipeline takes years."

Apprenticeship programs pairing classroom instruction with paid on-the-job training have grown as a preferred model among Ogden manufacturers, offering a pathway into stable, well-compensated careers that don't require a four-year degree — an increasingly attractive option for workers navigating rising higher education costs.

A Regional Economic Strategy

Local economic development officials view advanced manufacturing as a key pillar of Ogden's broader economic diversification strategy, complementing the city's growing outdoor recreation and tourism sectors with higher-wage industrial employment. Continued success, they say, will depend heavily on whether the region's education and workforce training systems can keep pace with manufacturers' evolving technical needs.

As automation continues to reshape manufacturing statewide, Ogden's experience may offer a preview of workforce challenges other Utah industrial hubs will increasingly face.
