Inside Silicon Slopes: How Provo Became a Startup Engine
What started as a handful of software companies along the I-15 corridor has grown into one of the country's most closely watched tech ecosystems outside the coasts.
The stretch of I-15 running through Utah Valley has earned a nickname that would have seemed improbable a generation ago: Silicon Slopes. What began as a small cluster of software companies has grown into an ecosystem that regularly draws comparisons to more established tech hubs, anchored by a mix of homegrown successes and an increasing number of companies relocating operations to the region.
Local economic development officials point to a combination of factors behind the growth: relatively affordable office space compared to coastal tech hubs, a strong pipeline of graduates from Brigham Young University and Utah Valley University, and a business-friendly regulatory environment that has attracted both venture capital and corporate relocations.
Beyond the Big Names
While a handful of larger, well-known technology companies have become synonymous with the Silicon Slopes brand, much of the ecosystem's recent growth has come from a broader base of smaller startups spanning software, fintech, and healthtech sectors. Local accelerator programs and venture funds have expanded significantly, providing earlier-stage companies with capital and mentorship that previously required relocating to more established tech markets.
"The story used to be that you built something here and then moved to San Francisco to scale it," said a Provo-based startup founder. "That's just not true anymore. You can build the whole thing here now."
Growing Pains
The rapid growth has not come without consequences. Housing costs across Utah Valley have risen sharply, driven in part by the influx of well-compensated tech workers, and local infrastructure — from roads to schools — has strained to keep pace with the broader population growth the tech sector has helped fuel.
Even with those challenges, most local business leaders describe continued confidence in Silicon Slopes' trajectory, pointing to sustained investment and a talent pipeline that shows little sign of slowing as the region's tech identity continues to mature.
