Park City
A Traveler's Guide to Park City Beyond the Ski Slopes
Park City's historic Main Street and surrounding trail network offer plenty to explore for visitors looking beyond the resort's well-known winter sports draw.
Park City's reputation as one of the country's premier ski destinations tends to overshadow what the mountain town offers travelers during the rest of the year — a historic Main Street, an extensive network of hiking and mountain biking trails, and a small-town character that predates its resort-town identity by more than a century.
Main Street's Old Town core traces its roots to Park City's silver-mining history, with many of the storefronts still occupying buildings constructed during the late nineteenth century mining boom. Today those buildings house galleries, restaurants, and shops, though the district retains enough historic character to feel distinct from a purpose-built resort village.
Beyond the Resort Core
Park City's trail network, extensive enough to satisfy dedicated mountain bikers for a multi-day visit, remains largely free and open to the public year-round. Trails ranging from gentle valley paths to technical singletrack wind through the surrounding hills, connecting neighborhoods and resort base areas across the community.
"People think of us as a winter destination first, but honestly our trail network might be our best-kept secret," said a local outdoor recreation guide. "Summer here is a completely different experience, and a lot of visitors don't realize that until they've already been here in January."
Practical Travel Notes
Park City sits roughly forty minutes from Salt Lake City International Airport, making it an accessible mountain getaway without requiring a long drive from the main Wasatch Front travel corridor. Lodging spans from budget-conscious options to high-end resort properties, with prices fluctuating significantly between peak winter season and the comparatively quieter summer and fall months.
For travelers willing to visit outside the traditional ski season, Park City offers a markedly different — and often less crowded — version of itself, worth exploring on its own terms rather than solely as a winter sports destination.
